R-410A to A2L refrigerants: what the phase-down means in Oviedo
New residential AC and heat pump equipment has had to use a refrigerant under 700 GWP - in practice A2Ls such as R-454B and R-32 - since 1 January 2025. Your existing R-410A system in Oviedo stays legal to repair and recharge. Pre-2025 R-410A equipment already in the channel can still be installed.
What the R-410A phase-down actually says

If you already own an R-410A system
Your R-410A system is not illegal and does not have to be replaced. It can be repaired and recharged. Any contractor who says the refrigerant is banned and you must replace now is selling, not informing.
What genuinely changes is the arithmetic on an old system. R-410A is now a declining-supply product, and A2L equipment is not a drop-in replacement for it — so a leaking coil or a dead compressor on a 2005–2018 R-410A unit tips the repair-versus-replace maths harder toward replacement than it did. We will not put a dollar figure on future refrigerant cost.
Which Oviedo houses this actually affects
Two Oviedo-specific consequences, both checkable against the parcel file.
- The 2000s subdivisions are the R-410A cohort. 35.2% of Oviedo’s 12,263 parcels were built in 2000 or later. Live Oak Reserve Units Three and Four (2005 and 2007 medians), The Sanctuary’s 2002–2005 villages and Oviedo Forest (2007–2013) were built as R-410A came in; any first replacement done before 2025 is itself R-410A. A whole pocket of the east side reaches the decision together.
- The 1985–96 stock faces a different question. Alafaya Woods and Twin Rivers are on their second or third system, and for a house still on straight-cool plus strip heat the refrigerant transition is a footnote next to the heat pump conversion — which, west of the bridge, is where the Duke rebate money is.
A2L refrigerants are mildly flammable, which changes handling, leak detection and some installation practice. Ask whether the crew is trained and equipped for A2L; do not accept “we still fit R-410A” as a reassurance on a new system in 2026.

Ask for the system's manufacture date and refrigerant type in writing before you authorise it. Those two facts decide whether the repair is worth making.
