AC compressor replacement cost in Oviedo, Florida
Replacing an AC compressor runs $800 to $2,300 for the part, most around $1,200, plus $300 to $900 labour or $75 to $150 an hour, with a cross-check range of $1,000 to $3,000 and up installed. Against a $5,000 to $8,000 changeout, a compressor on a system past twelve years is usually the wrong spend in Oviedo.
What a compressor costs in Oviedo
Read this before you use any number on this page. Every figure here is a researched third-party market range with its source and capture date named beside it. None of them are a contractor’s price and none of them are a quote. They are here so you can sanity-check a quote you have already been given.
| Job | Researched range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Compressor, part only | $800–$2,300 | Angi 2026. Most homeowners pay about $1,200 for the part. |
| Labour to fit it | $300–$900 flat, or $75–$150/hr | Angi 2026. Recovery, brazing, evacuation and recharge is most of a day. |
| Compressor replacement, installed | $1,000–$3,000+ | This Old House, 2026. The top of the band is larger or communicating systems. |
| Full changeout, for comparison | $5,000–$8,000 | Florida cost guide, home of about 2,000 sq ft. This is the comparison that matters. |
| Oviedo permit on that changeout | $74–$86 | City of Oviedo schedule, computed at $6,500 and $8,000 of value. |
Four questions before you authorise one
A compressor is the one repair where the arithmetic usually says stop. Work through it in this order:
- Is it under warranty? Under s. 559.957, Fla. Stat., the full length of a manufacturer’s HVAC warranty runs from the date of installation when the installer was licensed under chapter 489, and it may not be conditioned on a registration card. A warranty compressor still costs labour and refrigerant — but not $2,000.
- How old is the rest of it? The median Oviedo house was built in 1995 and is on its second or third system. A new compressor in a fifteen-year-old condenser leaves the coil, the fan motor, the contactor and the lineset at fifteen years.
- What refrigerant is in it? If it is R-410A, a large repair is a worse bet than it was five years ago. What the EPA rule actually says.
- What would you forfeit by repairing? If the house still heats with electric strip heat — most of the 25.0% of Oviedo built 1970–89, which is Alafaya Woods and the older Twin Rivers sections — and the meter is on Duke Energy, replacing with a qualifying heat pump is worth up to $1,000 as published. A $2,400 compressor on a strip-heat house west of the bridge can be a $3,400 decision.
Before you compare any number on this page
Check which side of the C.R. 419 Econlockhatchee bridge your house is on. West of it you are a Duke Energy customer, and Duke requires a free Home Energy Check completed within the previous 24 months before the equipment is installed — replace first and apply afterwards and the claim is denied. East of it you are on FPL, and none of the Duke figures on this site apply to you at all. Which utility is yours, and the order of operations.
Your warranty starts at installation, not at registration
In Florida the full length of a manufacturer’s HVAC warranty is effective on the date of installation, provided the installer is licensed under chapter 489 — and the warranty may not be conditioned on your returning a registration card or filling in an online form. If you were told you lost coverage because a card never went back, that is not how the statute reads.
Repair versus changeout, at the permit desk
A like-for-like compressor repair is not the same regulatory event as a changeout. A full changeout — condenser, air handler or both — requires a mechanical permit whether the address is inside the city or in unincorporated Seminole County, and there is no dollar threshold that removes it. In Oviedo the application also has to carry an ACCA Manual J-2016 calculation and the model numbers of what is going in.
The 2026 permit exemption does not cover an AC changeout
A residential air conditioning changeout always requires a building permit in Florida. There is no dollar-amount exemption. The new $7,500 permit exemption for single-family work, created by HB 803 (2026) and effective 1 July 2026, expressly does not apply to “any electrical, plumbing, structural, mechanical, or gas work” — s. 553.79(1)(g)2.b., Fla. Stat. — and a changeout is both mechanical and electrical work.
If a quote is cheap because nobody is pulling a permit, that is not a saving the law allows. Bill: CS/CS/HB 803 (2026), ch. 2026-63.
Been told you need a compressor?
Get the model and serial number, the installation date and the refrigerant type before you decide. Those three facts change the answer more often than the price does.
