AC breaker keeps tripping

AC breaker keeps tripping in Oviedo, Florida

An AC breaker that trips repeatedly is drawing more current than its circuit is rated for, and the causes run from a failing capacitor making the compressor labour, through a shorted fan motor or a grounded compressor winding, to a breaker that has itself worn out. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off - in Oviedo's 1985-96 stock the circuit is forty years old.

What is most likely wrong

Likely causes, ordered by how often they turn out to be the answer
#CauseHow commonWhat it looks like
1Failing run capacitorVery commonCompressor hard-starts, draws locked-rotor current, trips. Often trips on the hottest afternoons first.
2Dirty condenser coil driving high head pressureVery commonSame afternoon pattern; the compressor works harder than the breaker allows.
3Shorted condenser fan motor or blower motorCommonTrips immediately on start.
4Grounded or shorted compressor windingCommonTrips instantly, every time, with a hum first. The end of the compressor.
5Worn breaker or loose lugCommonWarm breaker face, trips at less than its rating. Common in a 1980s panel.
6Strip heat elements shortedLess commonTrips the air handler breaker only, and only in heat mode.
7Undersized or wrong-type breaker after a changeoutLess commonStarted after the new system went in. Check the nameplate MOCP.
Before you call

What you can safely check yourself

  • Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call. A breaker that trips is protecting the wiring; a breaker forced to hold is a fire risk.
  • Note the pattern: instantly on start, after a few seconds, or after an hour on a hot afternoon. Each points somewhere different.
  • Is the breaker face warm to the touch? Do not open the panel.
  • Condenser coil and filter — a blocked coil raises the current draw before anything fails.
  • Read the condenser nameplate for the maximum overcurrent protection (MOCP) figure and compare it to the breaker size, if you can do so without touching anything.

Where the licensed line is

Refrigerant, capacitors and the inside of an electrical panel are not homeowner jobs. A run capacitor holds a lethal voltage after the disconnect is pulled. Refrigerant handling requires EPA Section 608 certification. And in Florida the work itself is regulated: an air conditioning contractor licensed under Chapter 489 may replace, disconnect and reconnect the power wiring at the dedicated disconnect, and repair or replace disconnects, breakers and fuses on dedicated HVAC circuits — s. 489.105(3). Verify any Florida contractor’s licence, including ours, at DBPR Verify a Licensee.

In Oviedo

Why this happens in this housing stock

The circuit is the Oviedo issue. 25.0% of the city was built 1970–89; in Alafaya Woods the panel, the dedicated breaker, the whip and the outdoor disconnect are forty years old and have been through two or three changeouts, each reusing them. Breakers wear with every trip and every hot summer, lugs loosen, and a breaker that trips at less than its rating is a common find in that stock. A 2016 Hamptons house has none of that history.

Who fixes what: the disconnect, the dedicated breaker and the whip from it to the condenser are inside the scope a Chapter 489 air-conditioning contractor may replace — s. 489.105(3) says so explicitly — but a panel with wider problems is an electrical contractor’s job. Either way, if the compressor is grounded on an R-410A system past twelve years, this is the point the compressor arithmetic gets done, and on a strip-heat house west of the bridge the Duke rebate belongs in it.

Diagnostic visit, national$75–$150This Old House 2026. A competing Oviedo contractor publishes $89, waived with a completed repair.
Capacitor replacement$150–$400Angi puts the average at about $250 fitted.
Blower or condenser fan motor$300–$800ECM motors at the top of the band; a PSC motor in a 1986 air handler at the bottom.
Compressor replacement$1,000–$3,000+The point where replacement gets costed properly.
